Help and Ideas Guide to Choosing the Best Bar Stools for Your Kitchen Written by Worktop Hub August 19, 2025 3 min read Having a bar space in our kitchen is not only a great way of adding your own, personal touch to your room, but it’s also great for saving space if we don’t have quite enough room for a kitchen table area. With the trend seemingly on the rise, there are now a range of different styles of bar stool available, which can make it even more difficult to select the right bar stools for your kitchen. That’s why we’ve come up with a few tips on choosing the best bar stools for your kitchen: Space When placing your bar stools, it’s vital that you consider their space. This means you need to think about: leg room, space between stools, and the space between the stools and the counter. For sufficient leg room, the general rule of thumb is to leave about 23-28cm space between your lap and the counter, which will allow you enough room for leg movement whilst also preventing you from being trapped against the counter. The width of most bar stools is typically around 40cm, bear in mind this can increase with additional arms attached. With this being said, it’s important that you measure the space that you have so you know how many bar stools will fit in to the space. We suggest that there should be about 15cm of space between each of the bar stools, just so there is adequate enough room for movement. If you’re planning on having bar stools with a backrest, you will also need to ensure that the backrest won’t stop the bar stool from sliding neatly underneath the counter. When placing your bar stools, it’s vital that you consider their space. Height The height of your bar stools is also something that needs to be taken into consideration. If the stool you choose is too tall, this might stop you from sitting comfortably as your legs might not fit under the counter. On the other hand, if the stool is too short then you mightn’t be able to reach the counter. To be sure that you can sit comfortably at your counter, we recommend that the stool should be around 10-12 inches less than the height of the counter. However, we do have a range of bar stools that are adjustable, such as our Luca Bar Stool, depending on the style and material you want for your room. Comfort More often than not, people want comfortable seating in their kitchen so they can spend more time in there. If you’re someone that’s looking for comfort, then we suggest you select a barstool that is upholstered, as these tend to be more plush and comfortable. Bar stools such as our Carcaso Bar Stool or Allegro Bar Stool are great for adding a touch of comfort and style to your room. Design When choosing furniture to put in any room, it’s important to consider design in order to complement your room perfectly. For example, if your kitchen has more of an industrial appearance, we suggest something like our Rustic Trento Vintage Bar Stool, which is great for adding a contemporary touch to your kitchen. Or, if your kitchen has a more retro feel to it, then go for something like our Sofia Bar Stool, which is perfect for giving your kitchen a retro look and adding a splash of colour. When choosing furniture to put in any room, it’s important to consider design in order to complement your room perfectly.
